Clubhouse Renovation at Wigmore LTC

Problem:

With membership numbers steadily growing and a clubhouse last refurbished at the turn of the century, Wigmore LTC in Streatham, London, identified the need for a modernised space to better serve its 900+ members. Key needs included increased storage, a dedicated office for coaches and committee members, and a clubhouse fit for daily use. The existing footprint wasn’t large enough to meet these demands, prompting the committee to develop a phased plan that would be financially manageable and aligned with long-term goals.

Solution:

Phase 1 of the plan began in 2019 with the construction of a purpose-built office and adjoining storage facilities. Phase 2 involved replacing the old clubhouse roof with a fully insulated structure, while Phase 3 focused on a complete renovation of the clubhouse interior.

A detailed brief was sent to eight architectural firms, outlining the club’s needs and priorities, from safeguarding and energy efficiency to minimising disruption during the build. Daykin Marshall was appointed as the architect following a competitive selection process, and the construction contract was awarded to trusted builders 2020 Seven. A smaller working group made day-to-day decisions during the build, allowing for faster progress and benefiting from the expertise of interior architects within the club’s membership.

Work began in January 2021, during a national lockdown—offering a unique window for uninterrupted progress. Safety and safeguarding were top priorities once play resumed, with creative solutions like off-site temporary loos and coach-supervised access ensuring compliance.

Benefits:

The transformation has had a huge impact on club life, providing a welcoming space to relax and socialise after matches. While the build wasn’t without its challenges—including an unplanned £10,000 expense for a fire sprinkler system—the club was able to complete the project thanks in part to a £20,000 interest-free loan from Surrey Tennis, which covered the unexpected cost and helped maintain healthy reserves.

The new clubhouse has become a true hub for members and continues to elevate the club experience for all.
