New padel courts for Surbiton R&FC

Problem:

Like many racket sports clubs, Surbiton Racket & Fitness Club was continually looking for ways to grow participation, attract new audiences and ensure its facilities remained relevant for both existing and future members. The club recognised the growing popularity of padel and the opportunity it presented to diversify its offering, create new opportunities for members to play and socialise, and strengthen the long-term sustainability of the club. Delivering the project would require significant investment, supported by both club funding and strong backing from members.

Solution:

Surbiton invested in the construction of new padel courts, creating a dedicated facility designed to meet growing demand for one of the world’s fastest-growing sports. The project was delivered through a combination of club investment and member support, demonstrating a shared commitment to the future of the club.

The new courts were designed to provide an accessible and inclusive playing experience, appealing to both existing racket sport players and those completely new to the club. Alongside creating new opportunities for coaching, social play, leagues and competitions, the development aimed to strengthen the club’s wider sporting and social offering.

The courts were officially opened with the support of LTA President Sandi Procter, marking an important milestone in the club’s history and signalling the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Surbiton.

Benefits:

The impact of the new padel courts has been immediate and overwhelmingly positive. The courts have introduced a new audience to the club, increased activity levels across the site and created a renewed sense of energy throughout the membership.

With occupancy levels reaching approximately 85%, the courts are busy throughout the week with a mixture of social sessions, coaching, leagues, matches and general play. The accessible nature of padel has helped attract both existing members and new players, strengthening the club’s social environment and encouraging greater participation in racket sports.

The benefits have extended beyond the courts themselves. Increased footfall has provided a boost to the club’s bar, catering facilities and pro shop, while the wider club environment has benefited from greater engagement and activity. The success of the project demonstrates how strategic investment in facilities can drive participation, build community and help future-proof a club for years to come.
