Upgrading to Artificial Clay at Redhill Lawn Tennis Club

Problem:

Redhill Lawn Tennis Club sought a cost-effective, durable, and low-maintenance playing surface that could be used almost year-round. With several of its hard and artificial grass courts ageing, the club was looking for a consistent surface that players would enjoy, and one that would minimise downtime due to weather or wear. Feedback from members, combined with insight from other local clubs, Surrey Tennis and the LTA, highlighted artificial clay as a strong contender.

Solution:

After consulting with clubs who had recently installed artificial clay and gathering advice from relevant tennis bodies, Redhill LTC moved ahead with replacing two of its eight courts. Quotations were sought from three SAPCA-approved local contractors, with the club ultimately selecting Advantage Red Artificial Clay, installed by Trevor May Contractors. The installation process took around 10 days and involved removing the old surface, checking the tarmac subsurface, improving drainage, and laying the new clay carpet with ceramic-treated infill.

Benefits:

The impact was immediate—90% of members reported a preference for the new clay courts, which offer a slower, more forgiving bounce, reduced strain on the body, and consistent playability throughout the year. The popularity led to the club beginning a phased upgrade of three additional hard courts. Maintenance is simple but crucial: specialist contractors visit annually to top up and redistribute the infill, at a cost of around £450 per court, and members are encouraged to sweep after use. The surface is guaranteed for 10 years, with upgrade costs averaging £27,000 per court.

Redhill LTC now enjoys a vastly improved playing experience and a surface that supports both performance and player wellbeing all year round.
